Mark A. Smith brings over 30 years of clinical and hospital management experiences to his work with physicians and hospitals across the United States. His clinical practice as a surgeon and multiple roles in senior hospital administration make him extremely qualified to assist clients in developing solutions to their complex problems. Dr. Smith has extensive expertise in peer review, quality, ongoing and focused professional practice evaluation, criteria based privileging, low volume practitioners, and external focused review.
Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Physician Leadership, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the National Association of Healthcare Quality. He currently serves on the Faculty Advisory Council for the AAPL.
As a board-certified surgeon he practiced vascular and general surgery in Palm Springs, California for 25 years, and, currently, is a Clinical Professor of Surgery in the Vascular Surgery Division at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Smith’s previous medical staff positions include president, chief of surgery, chairman of peer review committee, and medical director of cardiac surgery at Desert Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College. He received his residency training at the University of Kansas Medical Center and had a fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Mark is also an avid light aircraft pilot and tennis enthusiast.
